songs about drinking

The best songs aren't all about heartbreak you know! Many-a-musician has made an ode to drinking too. Here are 15 of our favourite drinking related songs...

1. Gin and Juice – Snoop Dogg

Listen to it: at your pre-party session.

The Dogg makes an ode to our favourite tipple – gin – and addresses our all-time beef: when people turn up to a party without a bottle and end up drinking yours.

Best line:
'Everybody got they cups, but they ain't chipped in. Now this types of sh*t, happens all the time. You got to get yours but fool I gotta get mine'.

2. Cheers (Drink to That) – Rihanna

Listen to it: on Friday night!

Here Rihanna gets fuelled up on Jameson and shots in celebration of the freakin' weekend – and she's 'putting everything on her card'. A night out with RiRi sounds great!

Best line:
'It's getting Coyote Ugly up in here'.

3. Brass Monkey – Beastie Boys

Listen to it when: you're in the mood to get messy.

Exactly what Brass Monkey is, is up for debate. Some say that MCA, Ad-Rock and Mike D were rapping about the Brass Monkey cocktail – rum, vodka and orange juice. But it's more likely that the tune was dedicated to a specific malt liqueur, Heublein's Brass Monkey, sales of which exploded after the song was released.

Best line:
'Because I drink it anytime and anyplace
When it's time to get ill I pour it on my face'.

4. Cigarettes & Alcohol – Oasis

Listen to it: when you're chillin' in the sun with a beer.

Back in the day, Noel Gallagher told Q magazine that there was an underlying theme for the album 'Definitely Maybe', which was: 'Let's have it'. All the songs dream about leaving Manchester and running away to the sunshine with a pint in hand.

Best line:
'You gotta make it happen!'

5. Drunk Girls – LCD Sound System

Listen to it: when you want to party HARD!

This LCD Sound System banger is confusingly not actually about drunk girls, but drunk boys. LCD lead man James Murphy told Pitchfork magazine that the song is about 'drunk people and fun things'. He also explained that all of the boys in the LA mansion they recorded the album in were called 'girls' by the big boss.

Best line:
'Drunk girls cause a couple of heart attacks'.

6. Summer Wine – Nancy Sinatra

Listen to it: to remind your single mate about the untrustworthiness of boys/girls.

We can interpret the song as being about a man who gets seduced by a woman after drinking copious amounts of wine with her. She takes his silver spurs, a dollar and a dime after they sleep together. But despite being robbed, he still aches for more of her 'summer wine'.

Best lines:
'She reassured me with an unfamiliar line
And then she gave to me more summer wine' .

7. Alcohol – The Kinks

Listen to it: when you want to wallow.

After all of their fun songs, The Kinks decided to remind us of the perils of alcohol

Best line:
'Memories I cannot recall,
Who thought I would fall a slave to demon alcohol'.

8. Alcohol – Barenaked Ladies

Listen to it: the morning after the night before, to make light of your God-awful hangover.

Best lines:
'Would you please ignore that you
Found me on the floor
Trying on your camisole?'

9. Swimming Pools (Drank) – Kendrick Lamar

Listen to it: to get an insight into how the rich and famous (supposedly) party.

Let's just say that this song certainly doesn't promote responsible drinking

Best line:
'First you get a swimming pool full of liquor, then you dive in it'.

10. Whiskey in the Jar – Thin Lizzy

This famous song, set in Ireland, tells the story of a highwayman robber who gets betrayed by a woman. Well, that's what people divulge from the lyrics anyway!

Best line:
'Whack for my daddy, oh
Whack for my daddy, oh
There's whiskey in the jar, oh…'

11. Escape (The Piña Colada Song) – Rupert Holmes

Listen to it: while you're sunbathing on a tropical beach, with a Piña Colada in hand.

The lyrics tell the tale of a bored married man writing a lonely hearts ad, in the hope of finding a bit of excitement.

Best line:
'Yes, I like Piña Coladas, and getting caught in the rain
I'm not much into health food, I am into champagne'.

12. Moonshiner – Bob Dylan

Classic harmonica vibes and Mr. Dylan's deep reflections on his long love affair with booze.

Best line:
'If whiskey don't kill me
I don't know what will'.

13. Red Wine – UB40

Listen to it: when you've just been dumped.

Man does heartbreak hurrrrrt. Music legends UB40 have found the remedy in a bottle of juicy red wine.

Best line:
'Red red wine you give me whole heap of zing
Whole heap of zing make me do me own thing'.

14. Drink You Away – Justin Timberlake

Listen to it: when you need to relate to someone who is also going through an awful break up.

JT has turned to Jack and Jim for comfort after his break up, but it seems to have done nada for his shattered heart.

Best line:
'All of these rocks, I can't swim out of the skin I'm living in'.

15. Drunk in Love – Beyoncé

Listen to it: when you want to get in the… ahem… mood!

No booze playlist is complete without Bey's kinky contribution!

Best line:
*Blushes*…  we'll leave you to Google the lyrics…

So, whether you're looking to get into the party mood or drink away your sorrows, do it in true rock star style with our favourite boozy tunes!
